National Institute of Design (NID) is an 'Institute of National Importance' as per the NID Act 2014 as well as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.

NID invites applications from the candidates who are applying for the under graduate and master courses of Design.

Programmes offered:

Bachelor of Design (B.Des.):

The four-year-long Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) programme is offered only at NID Ahmedabad in the following areas of specialisation:

    Faculty of Industrial Design:
  1. Ceramic & Glass Design (10 seats)
  2. Furniture Design (10 seats)
  3. Product Design (15 seats)
  4. Faculty of Communication Design:
  5. Animation Film Design (15 seats)
  6. Exhibition Design (10 seats)
  7. Film & Video Communication (10 seats)
  8. Graphic Design (15 seats)
  9. Faculty of Textile, Apparel & Lifestyle Accessory Design:
  10. Textile Design (15 seats)

Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)

The four-year-long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) is offered at NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra in the following areas of specialisation:

  1. Industrial Design
  2. Communication Design
  3. Textile & Apparel Design

Eligibility Criteria:

Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) and Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)

Age Limit:

Candidates upto 20 years of age on or before 30 June 2017 are eligible to apply (relaxable by three years for candidates belonging to reserved category).
Indian nationals applying in the general category and candidates in overseas category born on or before 30 June 1997 are not eligible.
Indian nationals in reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD) born on or before 30 June 1994 are not eligible.

Educational Qualification:

Applications for academic year 2017-18 are open to applicants who have passed or will appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2016-17 from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent.

Overseas Category (Supernumerary candidates):

Foreign citizens-applicants holding citizenship of a country other than the Republic of India-are eligible to apply under the overseas category, provided they fulfill all the eligibility criteria mentioned in Sections 4.1 or 4.2 (as applicable).

Mode of Exam: Pen & Paper Based

Exam Pattern:

Admission to all of the design courses will be granted on the basis of a two-stage competitive exam. The objective of these exams is to assess the knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities of candidates.

Stage 1:Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims(3 Hrs.)
Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims will be conducted at various test centres across India. Candidates should note that appearing for the DAT Prelims or being ranked in the shortlist does not guarantee automatic entitlement to admission.

  • Visualisation
The DAT Prelims consists of two parts:
  1. Part I:
    Multiple-choice questions marked out of 70 points. This part has questions with one or more than one correct answer. The responses of this part will be recorded on an OMR sheet and evaluated digitally.
  2. Part II:
    Subjective questions marked out of 30 points, with responses to be provided in visual and/or written formats.

Stage 2: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains
Candidates shortlisted after the DAT Prelims will be invited to appear for the Stage 2 DAT Main exams at one of NID's campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru or Gandhinagar.

The DAT Mains for undergraduate programmes may consist of tests in different formats such as drawing/sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions, presentations etc. These will be marked out of 100 points and will be conducted in English. The test centre will be NID Ahmedabad.

For all other categories Rs.1000/-
