What is NID-DAT ?

  • Design Aptitude Test (DAT), conducted by National Institute of Design (NID) at Ahmedabad and at its Bengaluru and Gandhinagar campuses is an 'Institute of National Importance' as per the NID Act 2014 as well as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of ComNational Institute of Design (DAT) 2019merce & Industry, Government of India. As per the NID Act (18 of 2014), the institute is a statutory authority empowered to award its own degrees-Masters of Design (M. Des.) of two-and-a-half-year duration and Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) of four year duration. (The Institute is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)).
  • NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra are independent autonomous institutes under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offer full time Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) of four-year duration.
  • Admission to all of the design courses is on the basis of the candidates' performance in the two-stages of Design Aptitude Test. The objective of these exams is to assess the knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities of candidates.

Eligibility:

Age limit:

  • For Indian Nationals in General Category: Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1999 are eligible to apply for admission.
  • For Indian Nationals in Reserved Category (Other Backward Class - Non - Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST): Upper age limit for candidates is 23 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1996 are eligible to apply for admission.
  • For Indian Nationals in PwD Reserved Category: Upper age limit for candidates is 25 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1994 are eligible to apply for admission.
  • For Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) Category: Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years as on 30 June 2019. Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1999 are eligible to apply for admission.

Educational Qualification:

  • Applications for academic year 2019-20 are open to applicants who have passed or will appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2018-19 in any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, etc.) from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent

Overseas Category (Supernumerary) candidates:

Foreign citizens - applicants holding citizenship of a country other than the Republic of India-are eligible to apply only under the overseas (supernumerary) category, provided they fulfill all the eligibility criteria mentioned in Sections 4.1 of Admissions Handbook 2019-20: B.Des/GDPD.
Of the seats available for the B.Des. programme, 15% supernumerary seats have been created for overseas applicants. The actual number of seats available under Overseas (supernumerary) category are as follows:

Important Note:

  • Candidates must have passed their Class XII examination (higher secondary (10+2)) or equivalent at the in person counseling scheduled in June 2019.
  • Any candidate who has not passed their final board exam or equivalent before the in person counseling will not be eligible for admission.

Mode of Application: Online and Offline.

Application Fee:

The Design Aptitude Tests - DAT Prelims and DAT Mains are common to applicants to all three institutes, NID Ahmedabad, NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra.

  • For General/ OBC-NCL: Rs. 2000/-
  • For SC/ST/ General-PwD/ OBC-NCL-PwD/ SC-PwD/ ST-PwD: Rs. 1000/-

Exam Pattern:

  • The Design Aptitude Tests will be conducted in two stages
  • Stage 1: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims
  • Stage 2: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains

About DAT Prelims:

  • The B.Des. DAT prelims paper is a 3 hour test of 100 marks which evaluates the Design aptitude of the candidate. It comprises of a mix of objective and subjective questions.
  • The question paper is in English.
  • Based on the DAT Prelims scores, separate merit lists shall be prepared for each category (OPEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD). Only shortlisted candidates will be eligible to appear for the DAT Mains exam as per the schedule announced.
  • Separate merit list will be prepared for Overseas candidates.
  • The DAT Prelims will be conducted in the following cities in India:
    Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kurukshetra, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.

About DAT mains:

  • Based on the scores obtained in the DAT Prelims, eligible candidates will be shortlisted for the DAT Mains. The Admit Card for shortlisted candidates will be available for download only on the official NID admissions website (http://admissions.nid.edu).
  • The DAT mains will consist of tests in multiple formats such in a studio set up. The tests will be conducted over two days.
  • The total marks of the test will be out of 100. The tests will be conducted in English only.
  • The test centre will be at Ahmedabad or at all campuses of NID viz Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Gandhinagar, Kurukshetra and Vijayawada. Exact details of the Test Centre will be mentioned in the DAT Mains Admit Card. NID reserves the right to change the test centre

Weightages of DAT Prelims & DAT Mains for final result:

The Final marks of the candidate appearing for the BDes/GDPD programme of the National Institute of Design, will be determined based on the weightages of the marks obtained in the DAT Prelims and DAT Mains as follows:

Announcement of Results:

In order to be considered for the merit list, a candidate must have appeared for all the tests in both the DAT Prelims and the DAT Mains.
